Attributed as O-123 per the Overton reference, however, more properly described as O-123a. See our die state notes below. Sharpness finer but lightly cleaned with a thin scratch confined to Liberty's hair curls at the back of her head. Light gray surfaces with slightly deeper gray at the borders. This is one of the important rarities among Capped Bust half dollars and is clearly the rarest variety of the year, although O-105 is certainly close. This remains one of the important rarities in the entire series. Although not Condition Census quality, the present example is certainly a highly desirable example, representing an extremely important opportunity for the variety specialist.

This obverse die has a small patch of die lines in the space left of the date. Four dentils between stars 5 and 6 are merged by the start of a rim break at this point. In this die state, this feature is better described as a retained cud. The reverse has a "corrugated imprint" under the left wing, just above the upper pair of leaves. A fine die crack starts below the olive leaves and joins the tops of UNITE. Another die crack joins the tops of MERIC to the arrowheads. An additional crack connects the tops of STATE. Earlier die states are known without this imprint or the obverse rim break.

Purchased March 2, 1990 from "Fulop" at a Cleveland, Ohio coin show.
