Very lightly cleaned, however, now with very attractive pewter gray and heather surfaces. The surfaces appear lightly reflective with faint hairlines. Although very minor abrasions are present, these are strictly consistent with the grade and should do not affect the desirability of this rarity.

With this lot begins a series of extremely important 1827 half dollar varieties. In this and the next 28 lots will be found no less than eight Rarity-5 or higher Capped Bust die marriages.

The obverse die was very well worn by the time this variety was minted. The border shows no detail and the stars are drawn sharply to the rim. The reverse is in an earlier state with full border details. Raised die lines from the eagle's beak to left wing, and from lower left wing to upper olive leaves, are diagnostic for this die.
