Triple struck. Offset edge. Light gray surfaces with attractive heather toning. Substantial detail from one early impression is clearly visible with very slight rotation on both obverse and reverse. Remnants from the earlier date are completely visible right of the final position, with a digit 1 between 8 and 2, a digit 8 between 2 and 7, the earlier 2 under right side of the 7, and the first 7 clearly visible between the date and star 13. Now rotate the coin 180° and there is another complete date at peak of the cap. On the reverse, earlier remnants from the scroll and motto may be seen shifted right of the final position, with the scroll and motto from a third impression visible through the denomination. We will forego further description of the two distinct undertypes for the viewer to discover, however, there is substantial other detail visible. This is an awesome triple struck half dollar, a most spectacular error. The offset and overlapping edge device adds to the interest of this error, however, is strictly unrelated to the triple strike as the edge lettering was applied to the planchet in a separate process.FIFTY CENTS OHRALF A DOLLAR.
