Doubled profile. Strong double profile from drapery to forecurl, tripled along Liberty's nose. Sharpness slightly finer with a few very minor rim bruises. This appears to have been cleaned a long time past. The obverse has slightly reflective fields with pale gold at the centers, gradually giving way to vivid blue and greenish gold. The reverse has satiny lustre and is deeper with golden violet centers surrounded by light blue and amber. This remains a very pleasing example of the variety.

A rarity that retains the Rarity-5 designation from the third edition of Overton. This is certainly quite close to the Condition Census for the variety and may qualify. Don Parsley listed the five best known to him as 65, 60, 60, 60, 55. This example is the third finest listed in Steve Herrman's database. This example, and the two finer ones, being from the Pittman, Eliasberg, and Pryor collections were almost certainly not known to Parsley. Therefore, a revised listing might read 65, 64, 61, 60, 60, 60, 55, 55.

This is a later die state with stars on the obverse and letters on the reverse drawn toward the border.

From David Akers' sale of the Pittman Collection, May 1998, Lot 1484.
