Lightly cleaned with pale gray surface and hints of peripheral toning. A few faint hairlines are noted. This overdate variety has been the cause of much speculation over many years. Just what is under the final digit of the date. Al Overton noted in 1967: "This overdate has been referred to as over every figure from 1820 to 1823, but careful checking of all these dates has failed to turn up conclusive evidence. So at this time it must be regarded as over a date unknown." These words were repeated by Don Parsley in the 1990 third edition, and now, 35 years after Overton published his first edition, his words remain applicable.
