Very deep gray-brown and steel with splashes of lighter iridescent toning on the reverse. Some lustre remains beneath the toning. The surfaces have a slightly reflective nature.

Intermediate die state with some cracks of O-103a visible. The reverse has a die crack through E of AMERICA into the right wing, disappearing before the shield. Another crack extends through RICA. The other die cracks of O-103a are not evident on this example.
