Light gray fields with tan devices. Very light hairlines and other minor abrasions in the fields. An entirely desirable example of this very rare overdate variety. This overdate was not known to Al Overton when his 1967 first edition was published, was listed as Rarity-7 in the second edition and as Rarity-6 in the third edition. Today, the rating is Rarity-5.

The Logan Collection contains 19 coins dated 1812 including a highly unusual example with unlettered edge, one of only three such coins in the entire half dollar collection. Production for the year totaled 1,628,059 coins from eight obverse and nine reverse dies. Ten varieties are known and all are included here. Among coins of this date will be found the very rare and highly popular 1812/1 overdate with large 8 in the date, offered in the present lot. Although just listed as Rarity-5, this is a Guide Book variety with considerable demand.

Perfect obverse without evidence of the die crack recorded through the lower left stars. Russ Logan noted in his copy of Overton that just four examples are known without the obverse crack. There is not date for this notation, however, and more may be known now.
