Doubled edge. Extremely attractive with deep steel and iridescent toning over nearly full lustre. Sharply defined including full obverse border details and considerable reverse border details. An intriuging example with an area of rim flattening above stars 6 and 7 on the obverse and opposite this on the reverse. Overton described this phenomenon as his O-106a die state.

Sharp reverse clash marks.

In his text, Al Overton described examples of this variety with flattening of the rim as his O-106a die state, suggesting that these were struck after those examples without this feature. In examining three examples of this die marriage in the present sale, we believe that the pinched rim coins were not the latest die state.

The example in this lot, with pinched rim, has very light die flowlines on the reverse and only partial border details. Two other examples are from earlier and later die states, and neither exhibits the pinched rim feature.
