Very lightly cleaned with light heather toning, now with natural steel blue and greenish gold toning along the borders. A few very minor abrasions are evident. This is a highly attractive example despite the previous description. An important overdate variety.

This was the first full year of Capped Bust half dollar coinage. The previous year was one of transition, with Draped Bust coinage beginning the year, and the new design produced later. For 1808, the mintage was recorded at 1,368,600 coins. This coinage, assuming that these were in fact all dated 1808, was accomplished through the use of 10 obverse and nine reverse dies, for a total of 10 die marriages. Only one of these, O-110, is considered rare, while this 1808/7 O-101 overdate is quite popular with collectors. The Logan Collection includes 12 examples of this coinage representing all 10 varieties.

Very light obverse and reverse clash marks. The obverse has a die crack through base of the date and most stars at left. No other die cracks are present on the obverse. On the reverse, a crack is present through the tops of ATES.
