A lovely example with extremely sharp design features and reflective fields. Satiny lustre is subdued by golden tan, heather, and pale blue toning. Acquired after publication of the last Dime Census, this is finer than any example recorded. When the Dime Book was compiled, the finest recorded by the authors was just VF-30. Since that time, a few higher grade examples have been located, including this coin from the Subjack Collection. The Lovejoy Collection coin, just Very Fine, was plated in the Dime Book. In 1992, Stack's graded this coin "Very Choice About Uncirculated" and stated that it was finest known. Earlier, in the Ebsen Collection, Superior graded this AU-58.

This is the second obverse die use after JR-5. The reverse was used in various different combinations with this die marriage representing the third use. The emission sequence for this reverse starts with 1834: 1834 JR-3, 1833 JR-9, 1833 JR-7, 1833 JR-9 (again), 1833 JR-10, and 1833 JR-9 (a third time).

Upper and lower loops of first 3 only are connected by a die crack. Another crack extends through the cap to the border over star 8. The reverse has a crack through A of STATES from border to scroll. Other minor cracks are noted.

Purchased November 1999 from Jim O'Donnell. Earlier from Stack's sale of the William L. Subjack Collection, December 1992, Lot 1097. Previously from Superior's sale of the Buddy Ebsen Collection, Lot 730.
