A sharply struck example with fully brilliant and reflective lustre. A faint scratch is noted on Liberty's neck. This is an extremely attractive example and very rare. Russ Logan was aware of just 15 examples with this listed as finest known and the only Mint State example, however, see our notes below.

This is the second use of the obverse die after JR-1, and before either JR-4 or JR-10. The reverse is in its third use after 1832 JR-4 and 1832 JR-5.

The obverse has a faint die crack from border into the drapery. The reverse has a few light die cracks along with a retained cud at final A and the arrowheads.

Previously certified MS-63 by PCGS.

A note in Russ Logan's copy of the Dime Book provides a roster of 15 known examples. Among those were this coin from the Subjack Collection, listed as "MS-60" and number 1 on his list, along with the Lovejoy Collection, considered AU-50. That coin, however, was NGC certified as MS-64 when offered by Stack's in 1990. The Lovejoy example was sold to JRCS member #6 who considers the coin just AU-50. As we have not seen that coin first hand, we cannot provide any indication of our grade opinion, however, we would very much like to handle #6's collection!

Purchased at the 1999 ANA Convention from Steve Dougin. Earlier from Stack's sale of December 1992, Lot 1093. Ex William L. Subjack. From the 1985 ANA Convention.
