Illustrated in the John Reich Dime Book, page 188. Light gray with very minor abrasions and attractive iridescent peripheral toning. Just one finer example is recorded in the Dime Census. This variety is elusive in higher grades. Although the Eliasberg Collection had an MS-64 example and the Lovejoy Collection included a Mint State example, most examples known are below AU grade.

This is the third use of the obverse die after JR-4 and JR-5. The reverse is in its second use after 1829 JR-12 and before 1832 JR-1.

The obverse has a crack through the outer points of stars 1, 2, and 3 to the border over star 4. Perfect reverse.

Purchased April 1981 at an Indiana coin show.
