Natural light gray with deeper grayish brown toning along the borders and outlining the devices. An attractive example for the grade. A tiny reverse rim bruise is noted above D. This is one of two rare circulation strike varieties among 1827 dimes and may be scarcer than JR-9, although both are considered Rarity-5. This example from the Logan Collection is tied for second finest of 14 coins recorded in the Dime Census. The authors of the Dime Book noted that most known examples are in the range of VG-8 to VG-10.

This is the first use of the obverse die before JR-3 and the third use of the reverse die after 1823 JR-2 and 1823 JR-3.

Perfect obverse and reverse dies.

Purchased September 1995 from Jerry Wysong.
