Sharpness slightly finer although noticeably cleaned. Now starting to retone with natural light blue, gold, and iridescent toning at the borders, especially on the obverse. This is considered a scarce variety that is difficult to locate in higher grades. Remarkably, 14 collectors reporting their collections for the Dime Census, listed a total of 24 examples with one coin finer than this.

The coinage of 1823 totaled 440,000 examples. Today, three die varieties are known from a combination of two obverse and two reverse dies. Both obverse dies had an 1823 over 2 overdate.

First use of the obverse die before JR-2. The reverse die was earlier used for 1821 JR-10.

The obverse appears perfect except for a very minor rim break joining two dentils at star 10. The reverse has a crack from border to wing, through the upright of T in UNITED.
