Very light gray surfaces with peripheral light blue, steel, and iridescent toning. A few very minor hairlines are noted, however, this is an extremely attractive example. A key-date in the series with just one variety known. This single variety year is always in special demand as it is required by both variety specialists and date collectors.

The mintage was recorded as 100,000 coins for the year and this quantity may include coins with earlier dates. In 1984, the Dime Book authors considered this Rarity-3 with about 300 examples surviving. More recently, the rating has been raised to Rarity-4, suggesting not more than 200 examples are known. This is also an intriguing year in that a number of Mint State examples survive as do three or four Proofs. The balance is composed primarily of coins that grade Very Good or below, including damaged coins. Locating a pleasing Fine to Extremely Fine example poses the collector a considerable challenge.
