The mintage was recorded as 100,000 coins for the year and this quantity may include coins with earlier dates. In 1984, the Dime Book authors considered this Rarity-3 with about 300 examples surviving. More recently, the rating has been raised to Rarity-4, suggesting not more than 200 examples are known. This is also an intriguing year in that a number of Mint State examples survive as do three or four Proofs. The balance is composed primarily of coins that grade Very Good or below, including damaged coins. Locating a pleasing Fine to Extremely Fine example poses the collector a considerable challenge. The only use of either die.
