Illustrated in the John Reich Dime Book, page 108. Possibly finer with traces of lustre. Lightly cleaned with ivory surfaces and bright orange toning. An attractive example of this rarity. Weakly defined at upper obverse and lower reverse. Another rare variety, although a number of examples have been found in recent years. When the Dime Book was published, this variety was listed as Rarity-6 with two VF-30 examples being the finest seen. Today, JR-3 is considered Rarity-4 with an AU-50 being the top grade listed in the JRCS Dime Census.

The first use of the obverse die prior to JR-4 and the second use of the reverse die after JR-1.

Perfect obverse with very light clash marks on the reverse.

Purchased at the 1981 ANA Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana.
