Illustrated in the John Reich Dime Book, page 43. Rose, gold, and pale blue toning with typical weak details at the center of obverse and reverse. A diagonal toning line from Liberty's chin extends to the drapery. This coin was described by Stack's as "Brilliant Uncirculated" and was listed in the dime book as MS-63. Perhaps we are being too conservative in our grade opinion. Then again, Russ Logan carried this coin in his collection as AU-50. Regardless of anyone's grade opinion, the present example is among the very finest known. Just three examples were recorded in the 1996 Dime Census, including an MS-60, this AU-50, and a VG-8.

The reader is invited to consider the detailed study of early dimes presented by Allen F. Lovejoy and William L. Subjack at the 1986 ANS Coinage of the Americas Conference. Their presentation was published in the book of papers in connection with this event.

This is the second use of the obverse die after 1798 JR-1 and the only use of the reverse die.

Extremely heavy clashed dies with raised die lines below Liberty's chin.
