Deeply toned with gunmetal-blue, maroon, and iridescent shades. A tiny edge ding is noted at 9:00 on the obverse. Among the very finest of 10 examples in the JRCS Census. A scarce variety that is usually seen in VG to VF condition, according to Walter Breen in his update of the Browning reference. This is the obverse of 1821 B-1, B-2, and B-6. The reverse die was earlier used for 1820 B-1. A few minor rust pits are noted below the denomination and elsewhere on the reverse. Otherwise perfect dies. Purchased from Tangible Investments of America. Previously from our sale of the Chris Schenkel Collection, November 1990, Lot 1424. Ex Fred Matthews, Martin Paul, Sheridan Downey. |
