Sharpness slightly finer. Attractive gold toning with red and purple highlights. A couple minor abrasions are present, including faint scratches above the date. The reverse is rotated clockwise about 45°.

Walter Breen considered this to be the first variety of the year minted and noted that this is the rarest variety of the year with a Rarity-6 rating. This is the second finest example listed in the JRCS Census. This obverse die is unique to this marriage. The reverse was shared with 1819 B-3.

Intermediate die state with a prominent die crack from the lower right serif of 1 through bottom of all four digits, continuing through all stars on the right. This crack continues very faintly over the cap to stars 7 and 6 at upper left. Perfect reverse die.

From Melnick's sale of July 1982, Lot 895.
