Previously certified AU-55 by PCGS.
Only use of obverse 1 and also the only use of reverse KK. The obverse has a bisecting die crack from the border at 11:30. This is an early state of the reverse with minor cracks only.
This is the final year of Capped Bust half dime coinage with a total mintage of just 871,000. This is the lowest mintage of any year in the series. Later in 1837, the new Liberty Seated design coins were first minted. Among the former series, three obverse and four reverse dies were combined to produce five marriages. There are no remarriages identified. Daniel Valentine only described three of these varieties with the other two discovered many years later, in 1973 and 1975. These two new varieties are quite rare with the other three all relatively common.
Purchased October 1994 from Jerry Farrington.
