Logan-McCloskey Plate Coin, Pages 245 and 248. This is a lovely example with considerable lustre and delightful rainbow toning. Quite sharply struck. Only four finer examples are recorded among 18 coins listed in the Census.

The obverse has lower loop of 8 partially filled and minor rim breaks over stars 3 through 6. The reverse has a retained cud through tops of ED.

In Volume 1, Issue 3 of the Journal, Bill Fivaz named this variety the "retarded" 1834 half dime. The author described the method of die sinking that produced this blundered date. In the next issue, Volume 2, Issue 1, Michael M. Hall responded with further information, noting that the first reference he had found in print to mention this blundered date was an article by Doug Winter in 1984.

Acquired May 1998 from Stephen Crain.
