Logan-McCloskey Plate Coin, Page 239. Sharply struck with ivory lustre accented by splashes of pale blue and iridescent toning. A few light abrasions are noted on Liberty's chin. Only 11 examples of this variety were reported in the Half Dime Census with two of those rated MS-60 or better. This is a very rare die marriage that was discovered by Stewart Witham and first publicized in the November 1969 issue of Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine. An advertisement in the inside front cover of this same issue, by Abe Kosoff, invited serious inquiries about the offering of an 1814 Platinum half dollar, the same example being offered later in this sale! This is the third use of obverse 1 and the third use of reverse W. Both dies were retired after this marriage. The obverse has minor clash marks below Liberty's chin and beneath her ear. Severe reverse die lapping has obliterated much of the lower detail. Purchased January 1996 from Jim Matthews. Previously from Richard Kosta, February 1986. |
