I think this happened in San Diego in the early 80's, when a jet (shown in the pic) collided with a commuter plane. No survivors. Last words heard on the flight recorder were, "I love you, Mom."

PSA Flight 182 Boeing 727 inbound to San Diego collided with a Cessna 172 that had a student and instructor pilot practicing instrument flying. No survivors. Nine people on the ground also perished.

I was flying a Western Airlines 727-200 about 30 seconds behind PSA. We'd had breakfast with that crew up in Sacramento, raced down to LAX and then on to SAN.

Terran, you are incorrect about saying the Cessna was flown by a student pilot. They were both experienced pilot that were practicing landing approaches when the PSA jet overtook it from behind.

From what I recall, it was a student pilot as Terran wrote. I lived a block and a half on Dwight Street, people that perished were my neighbors. I was not there at the time I was stationed overseas, but my mother and my inlaws were there and witnessed the tragic accident.

Don't know what crash this was. on a side note, my parents were driving out of Balboa Park after a picnic when they saw the fireball behind them, impacting the spot they left.

It IS PSA 182, there was only ever one PSA 727 Crash. ALSO, the plane did not go down in Balboa Park, it wasn't anywhere near Balboa park. It crashed in a residential neighborhood about 400 yards west of the 805 freeway.

Hate to be a drag, but the 172 was 20 degrees off course. That's what started a national fervor over "small planes in airline airspace." I believe this accident gave TCAS research a big boost.

We have friends that were killed in that accident, it is disgusting how some people are making jokes. The crash happened in a residential neighborhood. We know people who were first responders, they are still affected by the accident. Come on people, have some compassion!
