Some of you folks need Recce training bad and seem to be hung up on tax dollars...why not cancel the blues and T-birds then...anyway this is an Aussie F-11. This trick isn't allowed in US by F-111 or F-14

Correction to above: Aussie F-111 not F-11- this was an airshow trick and prohibited in US (F-111 and F-14 both have P&W TF-30s and similar dump mast locations) Could get ugly if flames catch up!

US F-111s have been retired for over a decade, but they did do it as part of their air show routine before that. I saw it done at an air show back in the 80s.

The stupid Aussie airshow organisers think the public love this gag. It's not difficult, it's not clever, it does not demonstrate any aspect of the F-111's amazing performance. It's just a big wank. Intelligent Aussies (like me) are embarrassed by it.

I believe this is called a "blowtorch". Never saw a US F-111 do it, but heard the Aussies did it regularly.

This is a favourite RAAF "pig-driver's" air-show,F1 grand prix display in Australia The F-111's are affectionally called"Pigs" by their drivers at RAAF Amberley

I was Chief of Test for the F-111 during the early '70. All you had to do was dump fuel and light the burner(zone 5) on at least one engine, but usually we used two. This appears to be an F-111C. Longer wings were used on the C and FB models.

Hey guys that think this is an F-111.............look closer, it's actually a GR-1 or Tornado as most know it, we had a German unit in NM when I was stationed there abck in 97'-01'. The F-111 has a long, narrow point at the nose, the Tornado is wider like the one you see here.
  • Anonymous coward on 2006-Mar-21 10:45:26 Anonymous coward said

Thats not ever a tornado!!! take a look at the air intakes, which are round on an F-111, but they are rectangular on a tornado.

A8-143 bears the name of CO 82 Wing Gavin 'Leo' Davis. Its the Recce version of the pig, u can tell by the photo installation in the bomb bay. So to all those who think this is a GR-1 or EF-111, Guess again

I was at Nellis AFB when an F-11A did this at night down the Vegas Strip. He took off R/W 21, lost one of the underpooped TF-30s, and had to dump the fuel load before he ran out of airspeed & ideas..

See the fuel dumping out of the tail? The U.S. Navy is smarter. They have a NATOPS prohibition about dumping fuel while in afterburner. I wonder why?
