This is a WW II pic. I remember seeing it in a book. As I remember, the engine was hit by flak (Japanese, I think).

Try European FLAK...silver B-26s were very numerous over there due to shorter ranges involved. By the time we started keeping aircraft in natural finish in Pacific, B-29s were doing all the heavy lifting

This is a very famous photo of a martin b-26 shot down, over Italy I believe in WW2. Actually several members of the crew were able to bail out and survive this "flak" hit. Photo was taken by tail gunner of plane just in front .

WW2 weapon designers were testing the new 'boomerang bomb' at the time. you let it go and if it misses it comes back and you can have another go.

Not sure which would be worse, being in the plane seeing your engine drop or being on the ground and not see it dropping.

This aircraft is actually a MH-3T MK 9 BIS from Whazenhurst, New Jersey during the Seige of Toronto in 1977. The pilot is Cpl.Jimmy "jugs" Trifths from Plainfeild. See the can on a string falling from the newly inoperative engine #2 (or #1)? Thats a can of Tuna. I know because I WAS THERE.

...And the Flak was Icelandic, not Japanese or European. See how fine the flak is? European flak has a much grainer texture.

Maybe the crew survived, maybe not, but the only ones with any moral or human right to joke about it are those guys who were on board at the time. All these armchair comedians who think losing (literally) an engine is a joke are clearly members in good standing of that great fraternal organizations of American Slime Balls.

I just had to say some more: The smart ass remarks of these self-styled comedians are an affront even to the worst of professional stand-up comics who make their living at it.

I have to say that not all of the comments are stupid failures at trying to be funny, But most of them are. The comment by Dave on July 21, 2004. "Light and inaccurate flak, my ass." Is a true and realistic reference to what those guys went through. He is ironically referring to the oft-heard morning evaluation of a mission by the briefing officer: "Oh, and when you guys turn on your IP, you'll probably run into light and inaccurate flack." What they run into is enough accurate flak to knock out just about every airplane in the world. By the time they figure out what the hell is happening, they're so deep in smoke and screaming iron that there's neither time nor opportunity to turn around and chicken out. Dave is not some untalented asshole trying to be funny. He's a sensible guy who accurately sees the irony of the lives of those guys struggling through the horrors of war.
