Knife Edge? Not with the rudders straight, BOTH elevators in up and compression vapor coming off the tops of the wing strakes. This plane is executing a low level, close proximity, 90 degree bank, slow speed, high G turn across the bow of the carrier deck.

The pilot was Capt Dale "Snort" Snodgrass, at the time Executive Officer of VF-33. It was the opening pass in a Tomcat tactical demonstration at sea off the USS America in 1989.Although allot of skill is needed to perform the maneuver - it's more optical illusion than anything else...

This is a direct quote from an interview with Dale "Snort" Snodgrass regarding this picture (oh and I heard the story from him too at an airshow) it follows over (the next few posts..)

Snodgrass "it was my opening pass to a Tomcat tactical demonstration at sea. I started from the starboard rear quarter of the ship, at or slightly below flight deck level. Airspeed was at about 250 knots with the wings swept forward."

Birdman (quoting Snodgrass)
Snodgrass "I selected afterburner at about 1/2 mile behind and the aircraft accelerated to about 325-330 knots. As I approached the ship, I rolled into an 85 degree angle of bank and did a 2-3 g turn, finishing about 10- 20 degrees off of the ship's axis."

So this should clarify things for everyone regarding this picture. The photo was taken by an Aviation Boson's Mate who worked the flight deck on the USS America.

I actually worked for Snort at FITWING as the Ordnance LCPO, right before we both retired. As for the most hours, I believe that Okie Nance holds that record. As for that being the Stennis, I don't believe that her keel had eeen laid when this pass was done.

I was an aviation electrician in VF-33 and on the flight deck when Commander Snodgrass flew by us. I was standing just a little farther up the ship at the time and remember ducking a little. It was that close. After the pass he then went vertical.
It was awesome serving in this squadron and under "Snort". I also remember the time he came back from some flight op's in Key West. His plane was really tore up. Panel calfax screws were either missing or loose on the plane-you just knew some serious G's were being pulled. Later we watched the video of him pulling some 8g's in a tight turn after another plane literally doing rolls over the other aircraft. He used to say "just give me the guns:

Navy pilots tend to be "hot dogs". When my sister was dating a carrier pilot, he "dive bombed" our house in the middle of the night. He came straight down toward the house, then pulled out at low level while turning on his afterburner. It shook the house and woke everyone up. One time he decided to see how close he could get to the water of Lake Geneva, Florida. But he neglected to notice a very important feature of that lake. Across part of it was a stand of Sawgrass about 7' high. When he landed on the carrier with Sawgrass hanging from the intake ports of his A-4 Skyhawk, the crew chief had a conniption, asking him "Where in the Hell have you been?" I am not aware of the answer he gave.

It is NOT fake. The pilot was NOT grounded. The PIC was Dale Snodgrass. It was a planned display. For people who understand cameras, the photo is a result of depth of field. 8 g's? Then he broke a plane. (Not the 1st F-14 Dale broke or RIO for that matter) Capt Snodgrass is the highest time F14 pilot on record and will always hold that title. I'd rather have a "hotdog" who can fly on my wing or lead then someone who plays video games. As for your "hot dog" Dr Baker, your story is FOS. There as so many holes in this story I need a sieve to read it. Me? Retired Naval Aviator. Time in F14s and A4's.
