Audrey wanted to write a fun catalog, so here it is!  Not a lot of gardening books, but some very nice ones indeed, including some choice titles by and about Vita Sackville-West and Gertrude Jekyll.  And some nice women's gardening books.  And Audrey's fanfare, of course.

How to order

This is a self-made website by little old me, and while it might be big, it is not sophisticated.  The little buy icon icon takes you to a generic order form where you can type in the author, title, price, and indicate whether you would like to send me a check or PayPal payment.  I will confirm availability via e-mail, and once I've received payment, I'll ship the book.  It's that easy.  If you have questions,  please don't hesitate to ask  via email.

Condition Grades

There's a standard bookseller vocabulary, with terms like Fine, Very Good, Good and Poor to assess condition (to see these terms defined, click on the link above).  Most of my books are in Very Good or better condition, and I tend to overemphasize their flaws so that any surprise is a pleasant one.  Feel free to ask questions, and if the book isn't in the condition described, you may return it for a full refund.

Wants Lists

If I don't have the book you seek in stock, I will retain your book search in my wants files and email you when I do have a copy for sale. If you don't hear back from me immediately, that probably means I don't have a copy right now.  But fear not,  I keep extensive files and never stop looking....  so send me your request;  you've got nothing to lose!

Brown, Jane. SISSINGHURST: PORTRAIT OF A GARDEN. Illustrated by John Miller. Harry N. Abrams, 1990. Hardcover. John Miller's breathtaking photographs of Sissinghurst are beautiful enough without context, but the real, unifying portrait of Sissinghurst is provided by Jane Brown. She marries Sissinghurst's history with Vita Sackville-West's history well enough to delight even the most ardent Bloomsbury fan. This lovely gardening volume Is a special treat for literary enthusiasts, and contains a larger--and stronger--biographical element than you might expect from a book this visually appealing.   VG/VG $20

Brown, Margaret Wise and Hurd, Edith Thacher. TWO LITTLE GARDENERS. Illustrated by Gertrude Elliott. Simon & Schuster, 1951. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Minor wear to head and foot of spine and to edges of book.   VG. <SOLD>

Previous owner's sticker on front free endpaper, and small newspaper articles taped to endpapers. Small illustrated (black and white) book with concise, useful and well-written text. While the information is well organized and pleasantly displayed, Durand's personal observations pop up here and there, giving this field guide a sense of unique character usually missing from this rather clinical genre.   VG-/VG- <SOLD>

Ordish, George. THE LIVING GARDEN. The 400-Year History of an English Garden. Illustrated by Alison Claire Darke. Houghton And Mifflin, 1985. Softcover. The title's right on, although it doesn't take into account the history of the families who designed and maintained the garden. That social history satisfactorily leavens the wealth of natural history Ordish conveys, resulting in an entertaining, educational book.   VG+.  $7

Sackville-West, Vita. THE ILLUSTRATED GARDEN BOOK. A New Anthology by Robin Lane Fox. Illustrated by Freda Titford and Ken Kirkwood. Atheneum, 1989. Softcover. Minor soiling to title page. Schinz is a photographer, and this is primarily a coffee table book offering...well, visions of paradise. This handsome volume would make a splendid gift for a friend who gardens, who enjoys beauty, or who simply needs an armchair vacation. Did I mention that it's a bargain?   VG/VG <SOLD>

Sheldon, Elisabeth.  The Flamboyant Garden.  Photography by Dency Kane. Henry Holt, 1997, first edition.  Great pictures.  F/F,  $10

Stuart, David. THE GARDEN TRIUMPHANT. A Victorian Legacy. Harper & Row, 1988. Hardcover. Hefty, nicely-illustrated volume. Geared toward those with an interest in Victorians, Victorian gardens and in the history and development of gardens, rather than those looking for practical instruction. Stuart's book is solid in a scholarly sense, but more importantly it's absorbing and escapist, and it offers a window onto a world that today's gardeners try to recapture.   VG/VG $12

Thaxter, Celia. AN ISLAND GARDEN. Illustrated by Childe Hassam. Houghton And Mifflin, 1988. Hardcover. Slight sunning to spine.
