She marries Sissinghurst's history with Vita Sackville-West's history well enough to delight even the most ardent Bloomsbury fan. Geared toward those with an interest in Victorians, Victorian gardens and in the history and development of gardens, rather than those looking for practical instruction. Stuart's book is solid in a scholarly sense, but more importantly it's absorbing and escapist, and it offers a window onto a world that today's gardeners try to recapture.   VG/VG $12 Thaxter, Celia.
