BEGINNING with this initial issue, LNRAA will provide updates on matters affecting the membership. We plan to issue these "NOTAMS" monthly, but will shorten the cycle whenever time-critical issues come up. We welcome your feedback.
  1. OUR FIRST GENERAL MEETING took place, as most of you know, on April 24th in Lost Nation Aviation's hangar. Along with 40 members who attended, representatives of both the News-Herald and the Plain Dealer took notes, conducted interviews, etc. You problably saw their reports. As promised, we provided information about what we have accomplished to date, and what we plan to do in the future.
  2. THE MEMBERSHIP DRIVE continues with gratifying results. As we go to press, we now have 69 individual members, 15 family members, and 27 corporate members. While these numbers are encouraging, we are surprised -- and disappointed -- that many of the corporate leaders who were so vocal in their support of LNN at the outset have not yet joined ranks with the rest of us. We are working to change that situation.
  3. INCOME from the membership drive now totals $7,225. Our intent is to use these funds in the most effective ways we can devise to further the Association's goal...to retain the airport. So far, the money we have spent has gone for printing, postage, and office materials; all time has been donated, and a wide range of people have also donated a computer, fax machine, etc., etc.
  4. BY-LAWS of the association -- now officially a non-profit corporation in the State of Ohio -- are being finalized. Our pro bono legal counsel will make sure that the final version meets all foreseeable needs.
  5. AOPA'S INTEREST IN LNN will become evident to the public on May 19th, when Phil Boyer, president of AOPA, will host a Pilot Town Meeting at the Holiday Inn in Beachwood. The meeting -- in which LNRAA President Jack Thorp will introduce Boyer to the audience -- will begin at 7:30 PM. All members of LNRAA -- and everyone you know who wants to support our goals -- should attend this meeting.
  6. EMERGENCY USE OF LNN has been downplayed by those who oppose the airport's existence, but the recent extensive use of the airport by Search & Rescue aircraft is clear evidence of the value of LNN in life-and- death situations. Fortunately, the emergencies were false alarms, but also fortunate was the availability of the airport for these humanitarian uses. Next time anyone asks you why LNN needs to be kept in full operation, ask them how they would like to be on a sinking boat on Lake Erie, hoping for life- saving aircraft coming in from Erie, PA.
  7. START 'EM YOUNG is the wise policy of the EAA, the organization sponsoring "Young Eagles" introductory flights on Saturday, June 14th at LNN. These flights are provided free of charge to youngsters up to 17 years old by EAA pilots. For further information, contact Connie Luhta at 352-3228/354-7511, or Dick Hullihen at 352-6989.
  8. A RARE OPPORTUNITY to see both a B-17G and a Heinkel He-111 (the "Blitz Bomber") comes to LNN on July 14th, when both aircraft will fly into the facility for a four-day static exhibit, sponsored by the U.S. Aviation Museum. The aircraft are being flown in -- weather permitting -- by the Arizona Wing of the Confererate Air Force. To defray expenses (those planes were not build for fuel economy!), there will be a modest charge for admission into both aircraft. This is an opportunity to relive one of the most dramatic periods of this Century. Because LNN is here, fully-operational, convenient to every part of Lake County, you, your children and your grandchildren can see and touch these truly historic aircraft...aircraft that, in one way or another, helped shape our country as it is today. It's just one more way Lost Nation Airport serves all the people of this couty... further proof that LNN is the county's airport in all but the name.
  9. COMMITTEE MEETINGS will take place every 3rd Wednesday of the month, beginning Wednesday, May 21. Meetings will be held 5PM--7PM in the LNRAA offices in the Airport Administraion Building.
